LANGUAGE ARTS AND THEME

The children's books are coming along nicely. Students are showing great attention to detail, both with the text and the illustrations. Mrs. McDonough has been working with them on the illustrations. We hope to have these finished sometime next week and share them with our kindergarten reading partners. You will be receiving an electronic copy of the Medieval Times newspaper as soon as it is done. It will make for some fascinating reading. You'll see everything from advertisements for the castle of your dreams, a play-by-play of a jousting tournament and a description of the latest fashion in armor and weaponry.

Our next unit will focus on the universe. Students will learn about the characteristics of the solar system, particularly how the earth orbits around the sun and the moon orbits around the earth. They will learn about the relative distances and size of the sun and moon in relation to the earth, and how this relates to lunar and solar eclipses. We will also explore the origins for creating different calendars.

Survey

This survey is a carry over, but we'd love to hear from you. We're curious. How helpful do you find this website? Is it just one more thing to check that you'd rather not bother with? Is it a vital part of your communication with the classroom? Is it something in between? Would you rather just receive a paper copy? We really want to make this site useful for everyone. Please shoot us an email and let us know what you think. Your frank, honest feedback is greatly appreciated.

MATH

Fifth graders have started a new unit titled Containers and Cubes. Throughout this unit students will develop strategies to determine the volume of many different packages. They will investigate volume relationships between cylinders and cones and between pyramids and prisms with the same base height. In addition, they will learn about the structure of geometric solids.

Division of fractions is all that is left in the unit for sixth graders. The big ideas is coming up with questions that go along with a division equation. For instance, what does the following equation mean? 6 1/2 = 12 or 7/8 2/3 = 7/12 Can you come up with a word problem that will match these theoretical equations?
